چکیده

In four experiments we investigate overand underweighting of probabilities in decisions under risk. To account for this phenomenon we propose a view of the probability weighting function as a composite of cognitive and emotional processes and suggest that there is no single weighting function but two separate weighting functions for each process. Data obtained from a rating as well as three choice experiments, using both between and within subjects designs, generally support the proposed view. Given this broader perspective, cognitive "biases" or "errors" may turn out as highly intelligent solutions to maximize utility. * Dr. Eduard Brandstätter, Dept. of Social and Economic Psychology, University of Linz, A-4040 Linz, Austria. Pupil dilation signals uncertainty and surprise in a learning gambling task

Pupil dilation under constant illumination is a physiological marker where modulation is related to several cognitive functions involved in daily decision making. There is evidence for a role of pupil dilation change during decision-making tasks associated with uncertainty, reward-prediction errors and surprise. However, while some work suggests that pupil dilation is mainly modulated by reward...

Pupil Dilation Signals Surprise: Evidence for Noradrenaline’s Role in Decision Making

Our decisions are guided by the rewards we expect. These expectations are often based on incomplete knowledge and are thus subject to uncertainty. While the neurophysiology of expected rewards is well understood, less is known about the physiology of uncertainty. We hypothesize that uncertainty, or more specifically errors in judging uncertainty, are reflected in pupil dilation, a marker that h...

Utilizing Decision Making Methods and Optimization Techniques to Develop a Model for International Facility Location Problem under Uncertainty

Abstract The purpose of this study is to consider an international facility location problem under uncertainty and present an integrated model for strategic and operational planning. The paper offers two methodologies for the location selection decision. First the extended VIKOR method for decision making problem with interval numbers is presented as a methodology for strategic evaluation of po...

A Novel Measure of Surprise with Applications for Learning within Changing Environments

Surprise is informative because it drives attention [1] and modifies learning [2]. Correlates of surprise have been observed at different stages of neural processing, and found to be relevant for learning and memory formation [3]. Although surprise is ubiquitous, there is neither a widely accepted theory that quantitatively links surprise to observed behavior, such as the startle response, nor ...

A novel risk-based analysis for the production system under epistemic uncertainty

Risk analysis of production system, while the actual and appropriate data is not available, will cause wrong system parameters prediction and wrong decision making. In uncertainty condition, there are no appropriate measures for decision making. In epistemic uncertainty, we are confronted by the lack of data. Therefore, in calculating the system risk, we encounter vagueness that we have to use ...
